-
87% of Indiana's forestland is privately
owned - 4.3 million acres!!
- Only 15% of the timber harvested in Indiana is
managed by a forester.
- The timberlands of the U.S. now contain 23% more standing timber volume than in 1952.
-
There are 70% more hardwoods now than 35 years ago.
- In 1988 over 2.3 billion trees were planted in the U.S.
- As of 1995, about a third of the U. S. is forested, which is about 70% of the area which was forested in the 1600's.
- The most recent forest survey shows that the area covered by U.S. forests increased over the past decade by approx. 4.6 million acres.
-
Only 3.3% of U. S. forestland has been converted to other uses over the past 30 years.
The only way we can maintain a steady growth of quality forest resources is to promote
creative, multi-purpose forestry programs through cooperation with local forestry
associations, schools, government agencies and businesses.
Indiana's forest resources are highly productive and if properly managed can easily double their productivity
therefore increasing their economic return to their owners. Forest management is an investment that earns a competitive rate of return for the investor.
Many landowners have neither the knowledge nor the time to apply important forest management practices. Therefore, the need for a professional forester is evident.
